The district was made aware of an airdrop of inappropriate content during an athletic event held at a neighboring district on December 13, 2022. We wanted to reach out to the community to clarify how this can happen and how to keep it from happening. Airdropping is something that can occur on iOS (Apple) devices. Airdropping can not occur on an NCSD network (we do not have BYOD or Guest networks). Airdropping may occur at another location/district on their networks if they have a BYOD or Guest network available. Airdropping may also occur on our campus on a personal device and a personal data/phone plan. You can change your settings to make sure that you are not getting inappropriate content by following the steps below. You can deny an airdrop. It is a good practice to deny any airdrop that comes from an unknown source. Managing your AirDrop Settings On your iOS device, move to settings. Click on General settings. Click on “AirDrop” Change your settings to one of the following: Receiving Off Contacts Only Everyone If your personal device (or your student’s personal device) has “Everyone” enabled, you/they may receive unwanted and inappropriate content. On the NCSD campus, this “traffic” would be on your personal device and personal data plans only as we do not have a BYOD or Guest network. A reminder that parents/caregivers/families that provide student(s) with personal devices and personal data plans are responsible for the way in which the device is used and it is the parent/caregiver/student responsibility if a student airdrops inappropriate content to other students and or adults.

We are seeing hotspots on campus and are seeing and hearing that students are using them during the school day. When issued hotspots, students are instructed to keep hotspots at home as they are for home use only. The district provides Wi-Fi for students for academic use and the hotspots, while they are filtered, are not filtering in the same way as our district filters. Additionally, the hotspots were acquired through grant funding from T-Mobile and federal grants and the purpose for the hotspots in those grants is for home use and for students with connectivity issues at their place(s) of residence. We are working hard to make sure that our students are protected in the digital world and to reinforce good digital citizenship skills. Using hotspots for their intended purpose is an important part of that work. We ask that you discuss this with your student(s) and ask you to make certain that hotspots that are issued by the district do not come to school. We will begin claiming hotspots if we see that students are using them during the school day. Thank you in advance for your help with this matter, Newfield IT

The district has received FERPA agreements from around half of our families/caregivers. It is yearbook season, and we want to be sure that your student(s) pictures are included if you want them to be. Please be aware that if your family does not respond to our FERPA form, your student(s) may not be pictured in the yearbook or have their names posted in other places that honor our students and their work (honor roll, playbills, etc). If you have already submitted your FERPA form for your student(s) you do not need to refile. If you have not submitted your form, please do so as soon as possible using the link below. Please note that you must file an agreement for each of your students. FERPA form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeE_zw2Ya82krRyo7NHLdPZskGrzU1vZ00WauPaUQs4UJ85aA/viewform
