Dear Faculty, Staff, and Families,
I am writing to provide additional context regarding yesterday’s lockout and to explain the decision-making process that guided our response to the gas leak at the bus garage.
The lockout was initiated out of an abundance of caution after a gas leak was identified outside of the bus garage. The bus garage was immediately evacuated and remained unoccupied until the gas leak was fully remediated. Importantly, the leak was not located in any instructional building, and the bus garage is physically separated from the other district buildings. At no time was there a direct threat to students, staff, or occupants inside the school buildings.
Based on this information, and in consultation with the utility company, an evacuation of the school campus was not warranted. Remaining in a lockout allowed us to maintain safe, controlled conditions while limiting unnecessary disruption to students and learning. In all emergency responses, we strive to prioritize safety while minimizing the impact on instruction and the overall school day whenever appropriate.
It is important to note that the district does not take a one-size-fits-all approach to emergency situations. Each incident is evaluated individually, and our response is tailored to the specific facts, risks, and guidance available at the time. In this case, a lockout was determined to be the most appropriate action given the location of the leak and the absence of risk within school buildings.
We appreciate the patience, cooperation, and professionalism demonstrated by our faculty, staff, students, and families during this situation. Your calm support allows us to respond effectively and thoughtfully when unexpected events occur.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership as we work together to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment for all.
Sincerely,

Jesse Harper
