This fall, students in the middle school are diving into an exciting initiative that pairs high-quality experiences with our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to reach all learners. From art to science, drumming to Japanese fabric dyeing, the goal is clear: make every learning moment count.

Our districtwide MTSS team and middle school level MTSS data team collected data last year that indicated that chronic absenteeism was highest among students who are on and above grade level. In response, Mrs. Addy and the middle school teachers made a data-based commitment to increase engagement and belonging, working cohesively to design experiences that spark interest and deepen understanding. Their unified approach reflects a shared belief that strong teaching, positive relationships, and rich learning experiences can transform outcomes for all students.

This commitment is visible throughout the school year. The Physics Bus will be on campus on November 13 for a full day of Middle School Science exploration, extending what students are learning in class through real-world applications. In September, students engaged with art from the Johnson Museum of Art, sparking thoughtful classroom discussions and inspiring their own artistic expressions. Upcoming experiences include Circus Culture, where students will learn teamwork through juggling and performance; Aloja Airwele, a drummer from Africa, who will build community through rhythm; and Sarah Gotowkwa, who will lead students in creating shibori (Japanese tie-dye) shirts that every middle schooler can wear proudly at field trips and events.

These experiences are only part of the picture. Teachers are continually finding ways to extend learning. Our teachers are digging in through integration of enrichment topics into ELA and science lessons, connecting hands-on experiences to core standards, and celebrating growth and effort through schoolwide events like dances, assemblies, and pep rallies. Each event reinforces the message that learning is joyful, belonging matters, and every student has something to contribute.

Each of these experiences supports the Tier I foundation of MTSS, providing universal access to engaging, culturally responsive learning. For students needing additional motivation or connection, these opportunities also inform Tier II and Tier III supports by revealing strengths, interests, and entry points for re-engagement.

At the heart of this initiative is a team of teachers who believe in their students and in one another. Their professionalism, care, and innovative spirit are helping redefine what it means to teach and learn at Newfield Middle School.

The Middle School believes that when schools invest in curiosity, creativity, and connection, all students—and all educators—can thrive.
