The district’s new device ban is designed to help students stay focused on learning while ensuring their safety remains the top priority. While students may worry about being unable to use their phones during the school day, the district has clear plans in place to handle emergencies of all kinds.

Level 1: Personal or Routine Emergency

Sometimes, a student may need to send a message to their family—for example, if they forget a sports uniform or need to confirm after-school pickup plans. In these cases, students can come to the main office, where staff will call home directly. Likewise, families can contact the school office, and staff will deliver messages promptly to the student.

How it’s managed:

  • Students report to the office.

  • Office staff connect with parents/guardians right away.

  • Communication is handled without disruption to the classroom.

Level 2: Student Health Emergency

A student may become sick or injured during the day. In such situations, the nurse’s office is always available, and school staff will immediately contact the family.

How it’s managed:

  • Nurses or trained staff provide immediate care.

  • Parents/guardians are contacted by phone.

  • Emergency medical services are called if needed.

Level 3: Family Emergency

When a serious family emergency arises—such as an accident or sudden illness—parents or guardians contact the school directly. Staff ensure the student is notified quickly and safely, and arrangements are made for dismissal if necessary.

How it’s managed:

  • Office receives call from family.

  • Student is discreetly notified and brought to the office.

  • Safe dismissal procedures are followed.

Level 4: School-Wide Emergency

In rare cases, such as a lockdown, evacuation, or weather-related incident, the district follows established safety protocols. Staff are trained to keep students safe, and administrators handle communication with families through official district channels (phone, email, website, app alerts).

How it’s managed:

  • Staff focus on keeping students calm and secure.

  • Families receive information directly from the district.

  • Students are not expected to manage emergency communication.

Why This Matters

The new device ban ensures that in both ordinary and urgent situations, adults, not students, manage communication and safety. This keeps students focused on learning while ensuring families stay informed and connected when it truly matters.
