Dear Faculty, Staff, and Families,
We have received the results from the latest round of mold testing (attached). This testing focused on the basement beneath the original building and was conducted as a follow-up to the remediation and testing completed last spring.
To evaluate potential concerns, indoor air samples are compared to an outdoor control. Since most indoor air originates from outside, indoor levels are generally expected to be at or below outdoor counts. When indoor levels are significantly higher, it may indicate the presence of indoor mold growth.
The most recent results show elevated levels in both tested areas, with the highest readings found in the area outside and the area with a dirt subfloor. These elevated readings are for common varieties of mold, specifically Aspergillus and Penicillium. It is important to note that these are different from Stachybotrys, a more toxic mold more commonly referred to as “black mold.”
To protect the health and safety of our school community, the district will move forward with immediate steps while also planning for the best long-term solutions. On Monday, Newfield staff, TST BOCES staff, and ServPro representatives reviewed the results on-site and provided recommendations. Based on this collaboration, our remediation plan will include:
Sealing off the section of the basement with the highest readings
Installing six dehumidifiers and HEPA filters
HEPA vacuuming and surface cleaning in the storage area
Retesting all basement areas in two weeks, along with expanded testing in the hallways and classrooms above the basement
It is important to note that last year’s testing showed no elevated levels in spaces above the basement. Additional testing now will provide confirmation and reassurance. In the meantime, access to the storage area will remain restricted, and anyone entering must wear an N95 mask.
Remediation activities will be confined to the basement area and will not disturb the school day. It remains safe for students to be in school, and classes will continue without interruption.
Please know that transparency remains a priority. I am committed to keeping you fully informed as we move through this process, and the safety of our students and staff will continue to guide every decision.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Jesse Harper
