Letter
from Superintendent William Hurley:
Welcome
to the Newfield Central School District site on the World
Wide Web. I hope that you find these pages just as you would
our school community: warm, friendly, intellectually stimulating
and physically attractive.
The
Newfield Central School District is located in the hamlet
of Newfield, NY, an agricultural and residential area in
the beautiful hills southwest of Ithaca. This is where the
Finger Lakes meet the Southern Tier of NY and we enjoy the
benefits and beauties of both areas. Newfield is noted for
its scenic vistas and recreational opportunities for those
who love the outdoors. The cultural and educational assets
found in Ithaca and the major universities of Cornell and
Ithaca College are just minutes away.
Our
community was settled by hard-working individualists who
sought a better way of life for their families. That spirit
of helping your neighbor, centering life around family and
community, is an ethic that is still evident in our community
and schools today. Newfield is a great place to raise a
family.
Our
community takes great pride in our schools. The original
schools in the area were one-room schoolhouses founded in
1812 and centralized into the current district in 1938.
Our programs are housed in two buildings--a preschool through
grade 5 Elementary School and a grade 9-12 High School with
a separate wing for our grade 6-8 Middle School. The facilities
are first-rate and a source of pride with well-equipped
classrooms, state-of-the-art computer and telecommunications
systems and modern athletic facilities.
We
offer quality programs to match our facilities. Beginning
with our daycare and preschool programming (among the most
evolved in NY) and ending with our varied Advanced Placement
and Distance Learning offerings in high school, our educational
programs are challenging, diverse and focused on bringing
forth the most from each student. The learning environment
is personal and the class sizes tend to be smaller than
would be typically expected.
Our
students are among the best to be found anywhere. In the
2002 graduating class, 47% of the student body received
NYS Regents Diplomas and 82% of the class was college bound,
heading for such schools as Vassar, Cornell and elsewhere.
We are proud of our students and their accomplishments.
If
you are in the area, stop by and pay us a visit. You will
be impressed by what you find. |
